Major AED750 Million Emirates Road Expansion Announced to Meet Growing Population Influx
Updated: Jul 15, 2025, 03:24 PM
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure UAE announced a major Emirates Road infrastructure expansion project expected to begin in September 2025. The project involves an AED750 million Emirates Road expansion, a significant investment for a UAE transport infrastructure upgrade to meet the increasing urban population as more people flock towards Dubai and its neighboring Emirates.
The project will see the current three-lane highway widened to five lanes in both directions, covering a stretch of more than 25 kilometers. The construction, expected to take two years, will run from Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah to Umm Al Quwain, requiring coordination between various Emirates.
This development will soon be underway and is set to enhance the capacity of Emirates Road as part of a greater UAE national traffic congestion plan. The announcement highlights the UAE's ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure that supports both economic progress and quality of life.
A key component of the plan includes revamping Interchange No. 7 by constructing six new bridges with a combined length of 12.6 kilometers, enabling a vehicle flow of 13,200 per hour. The expansion will increase the road’s capacity to 9,000 vehicles per hour, representing an incredible 65% increase.
In addition, new collector roads will be built on both sides of the highway, extending 3.4 kilometers to better manage traffic and improve safety. Lastly, travel times between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai are expected to drop significantly once the upgrade is complete.
Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, confirmed that the project is to address an issue that received attention during the UAE Government Annual Meetings, which is developing solutions to traffic congestion, where the importance of road infrastructure development was also emphasised as a key enabler of traffic flow and national development.
Additionally, Al Mazrouei stated that enhancing road efficiency and upgrading key interchanges will not only reduce daily travel times but also improve support for sustainable development and deliver community satisfaction. More so, he reveals that the project is part of a comprehensive vision aimed at enhancing the country’s transport and road infrastructure network according to the highest engineering and technical standards.
By starting with expanding Emirate Road, the UAE will be positioning itself among the world’s leading nations in providing sustainable infrastructure with standards that meet future needs and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Al Mazrouei concluded, saying the move will also help deliver integrated logistics services aligned with the nation’s ambitions.
The AED 750 million Emirates Road expansion is expected to generate a strong multiplier effect for the UAE economy. With newer, wider roads, residents will benefit from easier travel across the emirates, improving logistics efficiency and facilitating regional trade — further encouraging greater private sector investment from both local and international investors.
The call to expansion is a clear sign of the influx of population rapidly entering almost all cities in the UAE. The Dubai real estate sector is already leagues ahead of this population surge. So far, several ready and off-plan projects are available and underway across the nation. From luxury properties to affordable options, the UAE property market is catching investment interest from across the world.
In fact, recent extensive reports show that the Dubai property market, in particular, is on par with cities like New York and Singapore. With Dubai’s property market outperforming itself over every quarter and every year, the Dubai real estate market is set to grow, and an influx of population and improved infrastructure will only result in a greater boom for Dubai property investors.
Following the expansion of the road, the nation may announce other infrastructure projects that could further contribute towards improving the quality of life and connectivity within cities and across all Emirates. This could include extending public transportation options or opening new entertainment spots in rapidly developing districts. Either way, the UAE improving one sector will surely result in a ripple effect, boosting growth and success in various sectors for the country.
