Dubai’s DEWA Produces 100 Tons of Green Hydrogen, Strengthening Clean Energy Leadership
Updated: Aug 29, 2025, 02:44 PM
His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced that DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project has produced over 100 tons of green hydrogen since its launch in May 2021, marking a monumental milestone showcasing Dubai’s commitment to sustainability.
A major amount of the green hydrogen was consumed to power over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity through a hydrogen gas engine. This move alone helped in abating over 515 tons of carbon dioxide, further boosting Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.
Furthermore, over 11 tons were shipped to ENOC, which were used to fuel hydrogen vehicles at ENOC’s Service Station of the Future at Expo 2020 Dubai, as well as to power other industrial applications. Above all, the Green Hydrogen project gives Dubai and the UAE a competitive advantage in the field of hydrogen fuel.
DEWA’s Role in Boosting Sustainability with Green Hydrogen in the UAE
According to the Green Hydrogen Report 2024 by Alvarez & Marsal, the UAE currently holds the top rank in green hydrogen competitiveness, further showcasing how DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project has played a pivotal role in consolidating the rank and heightening the competitiveness of the UAE and Dubai.
In detail, the Green Hydrogen project is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to produce green hydrogen using solar energy. Implemented in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, the project, which is part of a host of DEWA renewable energy projects, produces about 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, with a gas tank that can store up to 12 hours of hydrogen production.
The stored hydrogen is often used for nighttime power generation when needed through a hydrogen gas motor with a capacity of approximately 300 kilowatts of electrical energy.
His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, says
“The Green Hydrogen project supports the forward-looking vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to consolidate the competitive advantages of the UAE in the field of hydrogen. The project enhances DEWA’s efforts to support the National Hydrogen Strategy, the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of the energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050. It also supports the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to stimulate the use of sustainable transport in line with the emirate's strategic objectives to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Al Tayer.
The DEWA’s Green Hydrogen project was built to accommodate future hydrogen applications across the energy, industrial, and transport sectors. So far, the initiative has outdone itself and elevated Dubai’s status as a clean energy city, setting the UAE on its path to achieving its many forward-thinking sustainability milestones.
