Dubai Loop Tunnel Set to Serve Over 13,000 Passengers Per Day Will Begin Construction Soon

Updated: Feb 11, 2026, 12:43 PM

Dubai is set to begin constructing the first phase of the Dubai Loop Tunnel Project, the city’s highly anticipated underground transport project, announced just under a year ago. In partnership with Elon Musk’s Boring Company, the Dubai Loop project will begin with an initial investment of $153.85 million, strengthening discussions around Dubai Loop cost and investment

The Dubai Loop project, declared by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, is expected to expertly enhance the city’s urban mobility network. The initiative will link key commercial, residential, and tourist hubs through underground tunnels, supporting Dubai's future transport network goals

Adding to the story, Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), revealed during a session at the World Governments Summit in Dubai that the agreement with the Boring Company was signed around 10 months ago, with execution expected within one to two years.

Phase One of Dubai Loop

The Dubai Loop project will kick off phase one with a 4-mile-long loop tunnel, catering to four stations linking four of the city’s most prominent financial and entertainment districts. In detail, the project will involve opening a 6.4 km pilot route consisting of four stations, linking the districts of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa. This pilot aligns with the planned Dubai Loop route and stations and reflects broader Dubai smart transportation projects in the city.

Eventually, the Dubai Loop is slated to span 24 kilometres, consisting of 19 stations, including the Dubai World Trade Centre and Business Bay. With the city’s ever-growing population, given the surplus of visitors year after year, the Dubai Loop can offer the Dubai Metro some relief, giving daily commuters a greater variety of options for commutes. As part of evolving Dubai urban mobility infrastructure, this expansion supports long-term Dubai transport future projects.

The Dubai Loop will also make Dubai the second city in the world to set up Boring Company’s pioneering tunnel-based transportation system, following California. The Dubai Boring Company tunnel project positioning also strengthens the emirate’s Dubai transport innovation projects pipeline. This also creates an opportunity for the city to offer a unique and iconic experience for visitors and tourists looking for an exclusive, futuristic style of living.

Efficiency and Sustainability

The full project is expected to reach completion in about three years and is estimated to cost about AED 2 billion, with AED 565 million set aside for the first phase alone. According to Al Tayer, the Dubai Loop will rely upon a network of underground tunnels, which will showcase both surface and tunnel stations, designed to support seamless end-to-end journeys as part of the Dubai underground transport system

Al Tayer says, “Dubai Loop is an iconic project that embodies Dubai’s vision of smart transportation and is an innovative and sustainable solution. With Dubai Loop, the journey begins in a holistic, unprecedented manner. The project connects the most important commercial, residential, and tourist areas with the most active zones in the city.” reinforcing broader Dubai smart mobility initiatives.

He also sheds light on the fact that the cost difference is significant, where the Loop has proven to be much cheaper than metro tunnels, marking a remarkable cost difference per kilometre. He then commends the clear advantage of the construction method defined by the Boring Company’s technology in comparison to traditional metro tunnels.

To elaborate, the Dubai Loop project’s tunnels in 2026 are constructed with a diameter of 3.6 metres, defined by a unique tunnelling method, starting with a gradual descent before moving into a straight-line excavation, thus improving efficiency and construction speed.

Therefore, the collaboration will result in lower construction costs, faster delivery, and reduced impact on existing roads and utilities compared with conventional transport systems. Undoubtedly, the project represents a qualitative addition to Dubai’s transport ecosystem under the wider Dubai RTA Loop project roadmap

Pursuit of ExcellenceThe Dubai Loop underground transport project pilot route is expected to serve around 13,000 passengers per day, whilst addressing first and last-mile connectivity challenges. The full route is projected to have a total Dubai Loop passenger capacity of about 30,000 passengers per day, reinforcing Dubai’s credibility in delivering ambitious initiatives as announced at global platforms such as the World Government Summit.

Al Tayer says that the majority of projects announced at the summit have either been implemented or are under execution. He also confirms that the construction of the first phase of the Dubai Loop should reach completion within two years, with plans to accelerate subsequent stages once the initial segment is operational, including connected corridors such as the DIFC to Dubai Mall tunnel project
